Entry to the Uniformed Services NCFE Level 3 Diploma at Lancaster and Morecambe College
This course will prepare students for a variety of uniformed services by developing personal skills and qualities needed for a career in the sector, including leadership skills, self-defence techniques, drill movements and duties procedures and acceptable behaviour for the uniformed services. Students will be involved in physical fitness classes in which they will assess and develop personal fitness linked to the physical entry tests for the different uniformed services. Planning and leading adventurous activities and map reading skills will also be an important part of the course, as well as an understanding of planning for emergency situations and using telecommunications within the uniformed services.
You will study the following: 5 Mandatory units • Unit 01: Prepare for employment to a chosen uniformed service. • Unit 02: Develop aspects of physical fitness for entry to the uniformed services. • Unit 03: Develop leadership skills. • Unit 04: Understand conflict management and personal protection. • Unit 05: Participate in uniformed service routine. 3 Optional units from: • Carry out map reading and navigation across open country • Understand how the government, international organisations and media impact on the work of the uniformed services • Participate in a sports coaching session • Assist in planning and leading adventurous activities. • Explore the use of telecommunication in the uniformed services • Understand planning for emergency situations in the uniformed services
All students aged 16 -19 are required to study Functional Skills English and maths qualifications or GCSE mathematics and English if not already awarded a grade A*-C in these subjects. If you have a grade D at GCSE you will study maths and/or English GCSE. Students with a grade lower than D will work towards GCSE through the study of maths and English Functional Skills.
5 GCSEs grade A*-C including English and maths or a related Level 2 qualification You will also need enthusiasm for the subject/area, evidence of good skills in practical subjects, enjoying working with people, commitment to study, a proven interest in Public Services and good interpersonal skills Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.
This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including projects, coursework, portfolio presentation and practical performance
