A Level Geography at The Thetford Academy
Course description
GENERAL AIMS: The course is designed to address
key ideas and debates in our world today, such as
climate change, globalisation, urban regeneration
and management of the world’s resources. Students
will explore a range of issues and examine potential
solutions. This aims to engage students to renew
interest in geography through class and field work,
offering a greater understanding of our planet.
COURSE OUTLINE:
AS Unit 1: Global Challenges
This unit focuses on the meaning, causes, impacts and
management of global challenges and how we can
influence global challenges through our own lives. There
are two compulsory topics: World at Risk and Going Global.
AS Unit 2: Geographical Investigations
This unit focuses on fieldwork and related
research. Geographical investigation is an
important part of the GCE specification.
A2 Unit 3: Contested Planet
The unit comprises six compulsory topics: Energy
Security, Superpower Geographies, Water conflicts,
Bridging the development gap, Biodiversity
under threat and The technological fix.
A2 Unit 4: Geographical Research
Research skills and fieldwork are the key feature
of this A2 unit. Students choose one topic to
study from the six offered in this unit.
NATURE OF STUDY: Students are required to develop
fieldwork and research skills, case study knowledge,
and show a good understanding of current affairs and
‘geography in the news’ through background reading.
This will allow students to apply their learning to current
examples at a variety of scales from local to global. Unit 4 is
a student led project that requires independent research.
Entry requirements
Sixth Form Entry
Year 12
A Levels
5 A*-C at GCSE, including a C in English + Mathematics,
with a B grade in the chosen subject areas for A Level.
BTEC Level 3
4 A*-C, preferably including a C in English + Mathematics.
BTEC Level 2
2 D grades.
Year 13
Each student’s work is reviewed at the end of
Year 12 and progress into Year 13 is dependent on
satisfactory performance in the examinations.
