Level 2 Enterprise and Employability - Working in the Retail Industry at Leeds City College

Course description

Retail is one of the fastest growing sectors in Leeds. Leeds is the shopping hub of Yorkshire and you could be part of it. Are you always thinking of the next trend in fashion? Do you have an eye for what sells and what doesn't? If you're interested in working in the retail sector then this course is perfect for you.

Our retail course will help you to develop a range of skills in employability and enterprise and give you work experience which will help you secure a job in retail.

Course content

You will develop your employability skills, helping you to secure employment in the retail industry in the future. This will include workshops in:

  • CV writing
  • Searching for jobs
  • Applying for jobs
  • Interview skills and career progression

You will also receive advice and guidance on future study and employment routes.


You will develop your knowledge and understanding of retail businesses through organising your own micro-business and looking at existing successful firms. This will also include working on a major live project with the College.

Specific Retail Modules

Modules include:

  • Customer Service Principles
  • Dealing with Customer Requests, Queries and Problems
  • Understanding the Control, Handline and Replenishment of Stock
  • Understanding the Retail Business.

Tutorial and Enrichment

You will have weekly lessons with your tutor and access to the College enrichment programme.

English and Maths

If you have not yet achieved a C or 4 at GCSE you will have classes in English and Maths each week.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for this course are 3 x D’s at GCSE or equivalent. You will also need to have a keen interest in employability and enterprise and working in the retail industry.

You will undertake a group interview for this course, do not worry this is just to ensure you are at the right level for this course.


This course is practical based, with some written elements used to support this. Whilst in College you will take part in group activities and discussions and will keep a portfolio of the work done in class. You will have individual discussions with your tutor to discuss your progress and how they can support you.

Future opportunities

Upon successful completion of this course you can progress onto our Level 3 Events course or our Level 3 Enterprise and Entrepreneurship course. Alternatively you could decide to undertake a Level 3 Hospitality course with us.

Other options include:

  • Seeking an Apprenticeship
  • Gaining employment in the retail industry either full time or part time alongside further study
