A Level Chemistry at Hasmonean High School

Course description

Advanced GCE Chemistry enables students to:

  •  Develop understanding of fundamental concepts such as structure and bonding.
  •  Develop expertise in writing formulae and equations and become proficient in chemical calculations.
  •  Extend understanding of organic chemistry to cover a range of functional groups and their reactivity and mechanisms.
  •  Enhance practical laboratory skills through experiments that provide context for the theory.
  •  Deepen understanding of the connection between theoretical chemistry and contemporary issues such as pharmaceuticals.

Entry requirements

GCSE Additional Science grade A (with a grade A in the Chemistry component).

GCSE Maths grade A

Completion of a Bridging Booklet before September which is followed by a test with a required pass mark of 55% (compulsory for all students). An interest in science and willingness to read extensively around the subject is needed.

Unit 1: Core Principles of Chemistry 40% AS 20% full GCE 1hr 15 min written examination in two sections
Section A: multiple choice, Section B: short and extended written questions

Unit 2: Application of Core Principles of Chemistry 40% AS 20% full GCE 1hr 15 min written examination in three sections
Section A: multiple choice, Section B: short and extended written questions, Section C: Contemporary context questions

Unit 3: Chemistry Laboratory Skills I 20% AS 10% full GCE 1hr 15 min written examination covering practical laboratory skills. Includes a portfolio of core practicals covering organic, inorganic and physical chemistry.

A2

Unit 4: Rates, Equilibria and Further Organic Chemistry
40% A2 20% full GCE 1hr 40 min written examination in three sections.
Section A: multiple choice, Section B: short and extended written questions, Section C: Data questions

Unit 5: Transition Metals and Organic Nitrogen Chemistry 40% A2 20% full GCE 1hr 40 min written examination in three sections.
Section A: multiple choice, Section B: short and extended written questions, Section C: Contemporary context questions

Unit 6: Chemistry Laboratory Skills II 20% A2 10% full GCE 1hr 15 min written examination covering practical laboratory skills. Includes a portfolio of core practicals covering organic, inorganic and physical chemistry
