Working in Sport NCFE Level 2 Diploma Sport at South Downs College

Course description

This course is for students who are interested in working in the sports industry and are looking to gain experiences and opportunities to prepare them for employment in sport.

Students will need to be enthusiastic and willing to join in a variety of sports activities, sports volunteering and work experience placements.

Course content

The course has 6 units which will be studied during the year:

Planning and Running a Sports Event – You will gain the skills to plan, organise, deliver and evaluate a sports event for younger children to take part in.

Preparing to Work in the Sport and Leisure Industry – You will develop work related skills to assist in gaining employment in the sports industry.

Sports Volunteering– You will gain an understanding of the role of a sports volunteer and also actively take part in the role of a sports volunteer.

Work Experience in the Sports Industry– You will research work experience opportunities within the sports industry and will complete a sports related work placement for a two week period.

Participating in Sport – You will work with others to plan and participate in a sports activity and evaluate your own performance and the performance of others.

Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise – You will develop your knowledge of the structure and function of the body and how exercise affects it.

Understanding Business in Sport – You will investigate the wide range of businesses within sport, looking at types of businesses, income generation and consumer spending.

You will also study:

Functional Skills English and Functional Skills Maths – developing everyday skills that will help you in College, work and in your personal and social life.


Entry requirements

Mainly D/E grade GCSEs or a Pass in the BTEC Level 1 in Sport or in any other L1 qualification.


The course is 100% coursework so it is important students are able to meet deadlines and enjoy the challenge of coursework.

In addition you will sit assessments during and at the end of the year in Functional Skills English and Maths.

Future opportunities

This course has an emphasis on preparing you for employment in the sports industry.

However, if you achieve in each unit and have a suitable tutor report, you may have the option to apply for one on the following; BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport, CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing, BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Outdoor Adventure or employment in the fitness and leisure industry.

Further information

Every day students will be expected to bring an A4 Lever Arch File with dividers, plastic wallets, pens and paper.

You will also need to bring in kit every day for your practical sessions. This will be a white t-shirt, dark shorts or tracksuit bottoms and trainers. No plimsolls are allowed.
