Public Services - Level 1 Diploma in Public Services at Wakefield College
Aiming for a career in the Public Services? The Level 1 Diploma in Public Services provides students with a firm base and understanding of the work of the Public Services and provides development in the skills, knowledge and expertise needed to progress in this field. The course is a mix of both classroom sessions aimed at increasing academic ability and practical activities/visits used to develop fitness, confidence and teamwork.
Subjects include: Outdoor Activities, Map Reading and Navigation, Well-being and Physical Fitness, Team Working Skills and Employment Opportunities for Public Services.
Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C (or new grade 9-1) in these subjects, you will be required to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.
Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C (or new grade 9-4). This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.
3 GCSEs A*-G (or new grade 9-1)
Through the production of a portfolio of work that combines written and/or practical assignments. You may also be required to undertake presentations as part of your assessments that will build your confidence and communication skills that are vital for a career in all uniformed public services.
Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

On successful completion of this course and with good references from your tutors you can progress to the NCFE Level 2 Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Public Services or Level 2 Diploma in Public Services at Wakefield College. You may also progress to
other Level 2 courses at Wakefield College.
This course is the first step for those who are interested in developing skills relevant for a career within the Public Services.
