History - A Level at Canon Slade CofE School

Course description

What does the course aim to do?

• To give the student a sound knowledge and understanding of the periods studied.

• To introduce students to the range of methods available in seeking to understand the past and to increase their appreciation of the nature of historical interpretation.

• To provide students with a deeper understanding of how key events in the past have shaped our world.

• To create independent learners who can thrive in a university environment.

How will I study?

The course is taught through: class lectures, presentations, debates, private study/reading, essay writing and an essay is typically set every 3-4 weeks. Lessons also involve an analysis of the past through historical sources and through historians’ interpretations.

Course content

You will be required to follow both British and non-British content. This will be delivered through three modules taught over two years.

A Level (AQA Examination Board)

Component 1-Breadth Study

1G- Challenge and Transformation: Britain, c1851–1964

This topic examines the social, political and economic issues which have shaped our political system and society. Among other things we will study the significance of individuals like Churchill and how personal rivalries such as the one between Gladstone and Disraeli helped to shape British politics. We will study how and why people protested against the government in this period and will assess the effectiveness or their campaigns. We will learn about the role of individuals in helping to make Britain a more democratic nation and will use this information to achieve a greater understanding of our current political situation. We will also examine the impact of popular culture and the media on society throughout this period.

Component 2-Depth Study

2R- The Cold War 1945-1991

This topic examines the rivalry that developed between the USA and the USSR in this period and the impact that it had on global politics. We will explore concepts such as communism and anti-communism, aggression and détente as well as reflecting on the power of modern military technology, what hastens confrontation and what forces promote peace in the modern world. We will examine the role key individuals such as Stalin, Truman, Khrushchev and Kennedy had in shaping the relationships between the USSR and the USA. Among other things we will study the division of Germany, the Korean War, the space race, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the collapse of communism in eastern Europe and the reunification of Berlin.

Non Examined Assessment

The Rise and Decline of European Witch Trials in the 16th and 17th Century We will study the huge increase in the rise of witch trials and prosecutions across Europe and will examine the major causes of it such as an increased use of torture, social and economic factors, religious uncertainty, a “war on women” and other changes to the judicial process.

Entry requirements

Grade 5 in English and Mathematics plus 3 A*-C grades at GCSE with a points score of 5.5+ (which equals roughly 4xB/6 and 4xC/5), from the top 8 GCSEs taken in the first sitting.

Component 1: Examination- 2 hours and 30 minutes

40% of total A Level marks

Tests understanding of change over time and interpretation skills.

Component 2 – Examination: 2hour 30 mins

40% of total A Level marks

Tests understanding of a period in depth and source evaluation skills.

Non Examined Assessment/ Historical enquiry

Coursework- approximately 3, 500 words. The essay must show understanding of change over 100 years and show evidence of wide background reading and understanding of historiography in relation to the period. 20% of total A level marks

Future opportunities

History is a subject that is well-respected by universities because of the high level of analysis and interpretation that success in this subject demonstrates. It is not necessarily a vocational subject and those who study it go on to pursue a wide range of careers. Law, journalism, politics and business are just a few of the careers that a study of history can prepare you for.

Am I suited to this subject?

You should have a strong interest in the past and be keen to evaluate and interpret historical evidence and to present clear, concise, logical and relevant arguments in essay form. History is also suited to those with a genuine interest in current affairs and to those who are keen to formulate their own opinions about key political issues.

What will I need to do myself?

Essay writing will form a core of the work you undertake and independent research as well as private notes taken from varied sources will support your studies. You will be expected to complete at least one hour of extra background reading each week.
