Physics A Level (Linear) at Dereham Neatherd High School

Course description

Physics is all about the universe around us and how it works. It covers everything from particles smaller than atoms to entities bigger than galaxies.

Physics is a subject that is essential to study for a wide number of professions. Topics such as mechanics, momentum, harmonic motion and energy can lead to structural and mechanical engineering. Electrical engineering pathway is accessed through electricity, capacitors and fields. Astrophysics can be accessed through Newtonian physics and the space units, whilst Medical Physics can be reached through the unit on diagnostic Physics and nuclear physics.

Course content

AS In the first year you will study some key areas of physics to give you a firm grounding for further study.
- Mechanics
- Electrons, waves and photons
- Practical skills in physics

A2
In the second year you will examine a few chosen areas of Physics in greater depth.
- The Newtonian World
- Fields, particle and frontiers of Physics
- Practical skills in Physics

Entry requirements

Minimum BBBBB including B in Maths and Physics (or additional Science) GCSE.

Assessment

You will sit two exams containing a mixture of multiple choice, short answer and longer answer questions as well as completing an internally assessed practical.
