Course description

NCFE Level 1 in Sport


This course helps support the learner's personal development through acquiring skills and knowledge in sport, exersize and fitness. You will study 100% at SUFC. The learning experience at SUFC allows learners to gain personal transferrable skills that can be applied to the workplace or further study.

As part of the course, you will be required to complete work experience in a variety of sports settings at SUFC as well as performing various roles within the organisation of sports events; this will include refereeing and officiating roles. This knowledge and experience will allow for further progression within seeking employment and/or further education options.

As a level 1 learner you will be required to further your study in maths and english. GCSE retake classes as well as functional skills are embedded within the course so support further progression.

Course content

The Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure consists of the following units:

  • Taking Part in Sport
  • How the Body Works
  • Taking Part in Exercise and Fitness
  • Planning own Fitness Programme
  • Physical Activities for Children
  • Assisting a Leader of Sport or Active Leisure Activities to Plan & Deliver an Activity
  • Working in a Team
  • Assisting at a Sport or Active Leisure Event
  • Investigate Rights & Responsibilities at Work
  • Job Opportunities in Sport & Active Leisure

The Level 1 Certificate in Workskills will be taught alongside your sports studies and consists of the following units:

  • Developing Personal Skills for Leadership
  • Practising Leadership skills with Others
  • Learning from More Experienced People
  • Job Opportunities in Sport & Active Leisure
  • Searching for a Job
  • Applying for a Job
  • Preparing for an Interview
  • Interview Skills
  • Career progression
  • Planning an Enterprise Activity
  • Running an Enterprise Activity

Functional Skills English & Maths will also be delivered alongside your sports studies.

Entry requirements

Age 16 and a good reference on your character, attendance and punctuality.


All units are assessed through assignments which are submitted via the interactive learning platform in a variety of formats; these include written reports, posters, practical sports, demonstrations, group tasks, interviews, practical coaching, presentations, work experience, projects, performance observation and time-constrained assessments.

Financial information

Bursary information is available upon enrolment.

A charge of £200 for SUFC kit pack and training wear.

Future opportunities

The NCFE qualifications in sport have been developed to meet employer needs in the sport and active leisure sector and to give full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in this sector or to progress to further education. In particular, this course prepares students for the NCFE Level 2 Diploma in Sport as well as emplohyment in the sport and active leisure industry.
