Art and Design (Fine Art) AS/A-Level at Greig City Academy
The Art Department is a rapidly developing department within the Technology Faculty; it is well resourced and well equipped, with dedicated work areas where we can produce just about everything.
We have committed and enthusiastic teachers in Fine Art, with specialisms in Painting, Photography and Ceramics. We will be expanding photography and ceramics and developing the art department as part of the further development of the faculty area.
You will benefit from having expert advice and up to date resources for research, development and creation of your portfolio and when tackling you final project.
We pride ourselves in the support we give students in applying to university and development of real skills in Art.
In particular, the aims of the GCE qualifications in Art and Design are to develop:
- Intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers
- Investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills,
- Aesthetic understanding and critical judgement
- An understanding of the interrelationships between art and design and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate
- Knowledge and understanding of art and design in contemporary society and in other times and cultures.
The GCE in Art and Design has been designed to encourage an adventurous and enquiring approach to art and design. Successful students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of past and contemporary art and design practice and be able to produce artwork that embraces a range of ideas. There is a focus on art and design practice and the integration of theory, knowledge and understanding, developing aesthetic understanding and critical judgement and an understanding of the interrelationships between art and design. While developing knowledge and understanding of art and design in contemporary society and in other times and cultures.
The course is split in to four modules over two years with a portfolio of work and internal assessment and a standard external assessment at AS and the same structure at A2.
The course is open to all students who have a good Grade at GCSE or interest in any area in of Art and Design, and who wish to develop their knowledge of Art.
The course assessed through two large projects and four written exams
Weighting of papers and project works are as follows:
Unit 1 Portfolio Practical Internal 30% Unit 2 Assessed Assignment External 20%
Unit 4 Portfolio Practical Internal 30% Unit 6 Assessed Assignment External 20%
We aim the course at students who are aspiring Artists, Sculptors, Printmakers, Photographer, Fashion Designers, Textiles Designers and Set Designers, or those aiming to broaden their understanding of Art and Design, before specialising at university level or entering for Foundations courses at Art colleges.
