Drama and Theatre StudiesAS/A Level at Colne Community School

Course description

Drama and Theatre studies provides students with the opportunity to develop their understanding of a variety of concepts of theatrical performance. Students will learn and experience a variety of practitioners’ approaches to existing plays as well as being given opportunities to create their own pieces of theatre based on their acquired knowledge.

The course at The Colne develops a range of acting styles, as well as preparing students for technical aspects of theatre, including staging, sound and lighting. Past students have gone on to work and study in a range of areas, Drama, Theatre Studies and Performing Arts degrees being offered at many universities are a natural progression.

At AS Level students study 2 contrasting plays focussing on different practitioner approaches. This consists of exploring the play practically through various exercises including text and off-text work which is assessed practically. This exploration is supported by written notes as part of the coursework. Unit 2: Text In Performance offers the opportunity for students to either perform or be examined as a design candidate. The performance exam consists of a monologue or duologue and a group performance of a published play, assessed by an external examiner.

For A2 the students then devise their own piece of theatre from a variety of stimuli and complete the course with a written exam based on their knowledge of theatre and their interpretation of a set text (explored practically).
