Science (Applied) BTEC at Bristol Brunel Academy

Course description

You will learn about science theory through developing your practical and research skills. You will become a scientist and will build up portfolios of evidence for assessment.

Course content

Year 1

Unit 1: Fundamentals Of Science. Finding out about the science behind cell biology, periodic table, energy conversion through research and practical work. 
Unit 2: Working in the Science Industry. A chance to explore what happens in a science workplace, such as communication, lab design, safety procedures and security. 
Unit 4: Scientific Practical Techniques. You will be trained to following practical procedures and use a range of specialised science equipment.

Year 2

Unit   5: Perceptions of science. 
Unit 11: Physiology of human body systems. 
Unit 13: Biochemistry and biochemical techniques. 
Unit 15: Microbiological techniques. 
Unit 18: Genetics and genetic engineering.


Entry requirements

C grades in science GCSE or BTEC level 2 merit. Maths and English to C grade.

Minimum Academic Standard for Progression into Y13

Entry into Y13 is not automatic in CLF Post 16.

The majority of students will continue into Y13 dependent on the entry criteria for courses as outlined below:

For BTECs all students must attain a minimum vocational standard of passes for successful progression.

Students who do not meet the entry requirements into Y13 will be given guidance about a change of study programme and relevant courses available. They will not be allowed to re-sit the same core learning aims (i.e. subjects) as they did in Y12.


100% coursework marked and moderated by examiners.

Future opportunities


Foundation/BA/BSc degrees in applied science/vocational science courses. The UCAS points are widely accepted by non Russell group universities. There is a natural progression to practical science jobs such as lab technician.


Nursing; animal care; science technician; sports sciences; food safety; radiography assistant; forensic scientist.
