Public Services BTEC Level 3 at Varndean College

Course description

The courses available are the Single BTEC Level 3 (equivalent to 1 A Level) and the Double BTEC Level 3 (equivalent to 2 A Levels).

These courses are particularly suitable if you are studying in preparation for employment in the Public Sector, particularly in job roles where you will be expected to use physical fitness skills, research skills or carry out customer-facing operational roles.  They offer skills for working in the public sector but also transferable skills for any type of employment.  They are suitable if you are considering a police or military career but also if you are interested in developing, maintaining and protecting our society.  You will learn by providing evidence gathered from realistic workplace scenarios and activities.  You will gain experience through a wide range of tasks, visiting speakers and visits.  You can combine a range of units to build up different sized qualifications.

 

Course content

The course investigates a range of Public Services.  Some of the units we may study are:

  • Government Policies and the Public Services
  • Leadership and Team Working
  • Citizenship and Diversity
  • Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle
  • Dealing with major incidents
  • Emergency Services
  • Crime and the Community
  • War and Terrorism

Standard advanced course requirements

Assessment

You will be continuously assessed with a series of assignments based on real organisations and projects. BTEC courses are currently under revision so there may be some externally assessed units.

Future opportunities

The Double BTEC Level 3 course provides a valid progression on to further study at Higher Education or a direct route into employment.  It is suitable if you want to work in any type of Public Service organisation or simply develop a wide range of employability skills.

Further information

There are lots of trips including optional longer stays in places such as New York.  There are some compulsory trips and students will need to make a payment of about £60 at the start of the course.
