Biology AS/A2 Level at Kings Priory School

Course description

In A level biology students cover the AQA biology course which provides an in depth study of a diverse range of biological disciplines relevant to the 21st century.  It is appropriate for learners of varying aptitudes, giving clear guidance for less able learners, yet remaining rigorous and challenging for higher –achieving learners.

In year 12 students complete 2 units including topics on enzymes and digestion, immunity, heart and lungs, disease and biochemistry.

In year 13 students further their depth of understanding of biology through the study of respiration, ecology, photosynthesis, homeostasis and DNA technology.

Students have the opportunity to develop their practical skills throughout the course both within the lab and in wider contexts.  Students are involved in a marine biology trip to the Dove Laboratory whereby students spent time studying and sampling the ecology of Cullercoats bay using ecological survey and identification techniques.

Students also complete a 4 day ecology residential at the field centre in Blencathra whereby they develop their skills of ecological sampling of populations in a variety of environments.

Assessment

The A level course is examined through both practical and theory papers at the end of AS and A2.
