Course description

CACHE Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Early Years Education and Care

This course prepares learners to work with children aged between birth and five years, and to gain knowledge of children up to seven years, or to progress to the CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Education and Care (Early Years Educator).


Course content

The qualification is split into four themes as follows:

Theme 1 - Introducing the Role of the Early Years Practitioner

Theme 2 - Legislation Framework and Professional Practice

Theme 3 - Play, Development and Learning for School

Theme 4 - Professional Development

You will also complete 250 hours in a work placement


Our placement coordinators organise appropriate work placements where learners will be assessed on their performance.  Learners will need to be able to make the travel arrangements necessary for them to attend these allocated settings on a weekly basis.

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of 164 GCSE points including English and Maths at Grade D or above.
  • A successful HRC Disclosure and Barring Service check.
  • You must demonstrate suitability to work with children and adults, show empathy and a keen interest in working with and helping others, along with good communication and interpersonal skills.

Applications are welcome from male and female students.


In order to gain the full qualification, learners must achieve passes in the following:

All Units (externally set and internally marked)

A Longitudinal Study - this is a set of observations using different methods (externally set and internally marked)

Financial information

Free to those under 19 on 31st August 2016. If you are 19 or over on 31st August 2016, have been a permanent resident in the EU for the last three years, and are a fee paying new entrant you will pay £1500 tuition fee (this was the fee for 2015/16 and could be subject to change for 2016/17). However, fee paying students continuing on the same course for a second year will be charged £1500 tuition fee (this was the fee for 2015/16 and could be subject to change for 2016/17). You will be required to pay an administration fee, exam fees, kit fee, materials fee and an Awarding Body Registration fee if applicable. For these costs please contact our Information Centre.

Future opportunities

If you complete this course successfully you can apply to study a Level 3 course such as the Diploma in Early Years Education and Care (Early Years Educator) or the BTEC National 90 Credit/Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care.

This Level 2 qualification prepares you to work, in a supervised capacity, with children and their families in a variety of settings and environments within the sector of Children's Services.

Additional Activities 

As part of your programme you will also attend English and maths sessions to support you to improve your grades.

You will have the chance to take part in additional activities such as charity fund raising and exciting trips and visits.

What will I need? 

Course fees (excluding tuition) for 2015-2016 were approximately £160.00 this amount includes some trips, a course text book, placement polo shirt, and Disclosure and Barring Service certificate.


Other costs are: Travel costs to placement and any additional books.

      Trains: The National Express East Anglia Service provides services from Broxbourne and Cheshunt stations to London Liverpool Street, Tottenham Hale, Waltham Cross, Enfield Lock, Harlow, Sawbridgeworth, Bishop’s Stortford and Stansted.
