Computing AS/A2 at Sir Frederic Osborn School

Course description

The AS/A2 Computing
qualification encourages students
to develop their knowledge and
understanding of hardware and
communications, software, applications and effects, and information.
It also develops skills in analysis, design, implementation and
evaluation.
The AS is the first half of the A Level qualification. It is made up of
two mandatory units which are externally assessed. Students will
develop their knowledge and understanding of computer systems,
programming and other principles of computing, and how to apply
these to the solution of problems.
A2 is made up of two mandatory units, one is externally assessed
and the other internally assessed through a significant piece of
coursework. Building on the topics studied at AS students will
learn about the use of algorithms and test strategies, maintenance,
and documenting solutions to gain an understanding of systematic
methods. These skills will be applied to solve real problems with
computer based solutions.
Computing is a practical subject and the lessons reflect this with a
variety of teaching methods being used. Through the project you
will develop your skills in the use of advanced features of software
packages.
