Mathematics A Level at La Sainte Union Catholic Secondary School

Course description

Level 3 mathematical studies (Core Maths) is a qualification designed for students who have achieved a grade C or above at GCSE.

It helps to develop students’ mathematical skills and thinking and supports courses such as A-level psychology, sciences and geography, as well as technical and vocational qualifications.

* Analysis of data

* Maths for personal finance

* Estimation

* Critical analysis of given data and models (including spreadsheets and tabular data)

Optional

* The normal distribution

* Probabilities and estimation

* Correlation and regression

* Critical path analysis

* Expectation

* Cost benefit analysis

Entry requirements

General qualifications for your chosen pathway (see How to apply – Entry Requirements)

5 or above in GCSE Maths

Assessment

* Critical analysis of data, for example data presented in politics and the media

* Communicating numerical data based on real contexts using graphs and indicators such as averages and measures of spread

* Use of technology to analyse, process and present numerical data

* Application of mathematical ideas to real financial contexts including loans and taxation

* Making quick estimates of large numbers from limited information

* Using project management techniques including critical path analysis and Gantt charts

Future opportunities

* Skills from the course are highly applicable to business and management roles

* Communicating numerical ideas is a key skill for a wide range of jobs

* Skills useful for many courses including business and social science are a core element of the course

* Success on the course prepares you for better understanding personal finance including taxation and mortgages
