Public Services Level 2 BTEC Diploma at East Surrey College

Course description

This course is an ideal option for those wanting to work in the various services, such as the Police Service, Prison Service, Fire and Rescue Service, Royal Air Force, British Army and Royal Navy. This course is disciplined and practical and offers a wide range of subjects that will prepare learners for careers within services, give them an idea of potential career paths and offer a range of practical experience from expeditions, teambuilding and leadership to career planning and fitness. A BTEC Level 2 Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs A*-C grade.

Course content

Within the course, students will study topics such as health, diet, leadership, teamwork, role and work of public services, effects of crime, volunteering and fitness. They will also complete a work experience or work based project programme. There will be an opportunity to complete a GCSE in English and Maths.

Level 1 Diploma or Five GCSEs grade A*-D that includes English & Maths

Assessment

BTEC is a portfolio based assessment programme that allows learners to submit coursework at specific dates throughout the academic year. Assessment comes in a range of forms, and includes essays and reports, practical assessment and observation, class tests, presentations, discussion seminars and practical projects.

Financial information

If you are under 19 on 31/08/2016, tuition is free. If you are 19 or over please consult Client Services for advice and guidance on funding and eligibility.
 
Please be aware that there may be additional costs for equipment and educational visits. This information will be available from the curriculum staff at interview.
 

Future opportunities

Obtaining a merit or above will allow you to move on to a Public Services Level 3 Extended Diploma, or another Level 3 qualification at the College. It can also lead to a range of jobs working in industries including, and not limited to, sport, outdoor and adventurous, social and youth work and events

Further information

Equipment needed:
 
• You will be supplied with a uniform (which will be supplied from course fees) consisting of two polo-shirts
• You will need pens and paper and relevant stationery to complete basic classroom tasks
• You will also need basic expedition equipment (ie walking boots, mess tin, rucksack). A full list of expedition equipment will be provided on induction
