English Language AS/A-Level at Highams Park School

Course description

English Language will enable you to develop your understanding , appreciation and enjoyment of English. At AS we will start by exploring and understanding spoken and written language in use. You will analyse a variety of everyday spoken and written texts. You will explore how spoken and written texts can reproduce ideas about cultural values. You will be given the opportunity to produce a folder comprising of two pieces of original writing. You will be asked to write a commentary for both analysing the writing process and evaluating its effectiveness. At A2 you will develop your understanding of the key concepts and theories surrounding language use and in particular the acquisition of language by children and the development of English over time. You will also produce two pieces of writing. In the first you will investigate and analyse a language topic using data through a variety of methods. This investigation may be chosen from topics covered during the AS/A2 course. For the second piece you will create a Media text for a non-specialist audience that highlights the investigation you have explored in your first piece. This will help you to use writing and editorial skills. You will learn by: Discussion/debate Presentations Small group work briefs and tasks Independent research Tutorials Objective and critical viewing of texts, for example films

Entry requirements

You will need a grade B in English Language. The course suits those with an aptitude for English language and writing who will enjoy analysing a wide range of texts from everyday sources. You will enjoy writing your own texts.

Future opportunities

English Language links particularly well with other Arts subjects such as English Literature, Media Studies, Film Studies and Sociology. The breath of the course means that it complements many other subjects including, for instance: History, Theatre Studies and Psychology . The breath, depth and diversity of English Language will complement a range of Higher Education courses and may be of value to those seeking employment within Journalism, Publishing and Advertising.You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in English Language, which could lead onto higher education in English Language or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to English Language such as a Teacher, Journalist, or Editor. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking.
