Music Technology A Level at Thomas Gainsborough School

Course description

A Level Music Technology is a practical and engaging subject that develops skill sets used in the music industry, that can build on and utilise established skills in performance and theory. This course contains three areas of study:

  • Recording and production techniques for both corrective and creative purposes
  • Principles of sound and audio technology
  • The development of recording and production technology

Entry requirements

Students require a BTEC Music (Merit) or GCSE Music (Grade 5) or Associated Board Grade 5 Theory standard Proficiency on an instrument to Grade 5 standard.


Component 1 - 20% - Production tools and techniques to capture, edit, process and mix an audio recording.

One recording, chose one song from a list of 10 artists / songs provided by Pearson Edexcel.

Component 2 - 20% - Creating, editing, manipulating and structuring sounds to produce a technology-based composition.

In the A Level you choose one technology-based composition from three briefs set by Pearson Edexcel released 1st September preceding the year in which the qualification is to be awarded.

Component 3 - 25% - Knowledge and understanding of recording and production techniques and principles, in the context of a series of unfamiliar commercial recordings supplied by Pearson. This requires the application of knowledge related to all three areas of study through a listening test.

Component 4 - 35% - Knowledge and understanding of editing, mixing and production techniques, to be applied to unfamiliar materials provided by Pearson in the examination. This requires the application of knowledge related to two of the areas of study tested in controlled conditions.

Future opportunities

Further study into music at university whether on an academic music degree or a practical performance course. A Level Music Technology develops both your creative and analytical skills, these being transferable to any course or profession in the future. Please note it is advantageous to have or to be working towards the Associated Board Grade 5 Music Theory Qualification as this will support your learning on the A Level course.
