Engineering (City & Guilds) Certificate at Solihull College & University Centre

Course description

Our Level 2 course in Electrical and Electronics Technology provides a broad range of interrelated subjects based around the Electrotechnical and Engineering Industries, giving you a wide spectrum of industry knowledge to experience the sector in all aspects, with scope to choose a specific branch to specialise in.

Course content

Units of study include:

- Working in engineering,
- Principles of engineering technology,
- Maintaining electrical wiring support systems,
- Principles of electrical and electronics technology,
- Wiring and testing electrical circuits.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 2 GCSE's at Grade C/4 or above. A successful interview, reference and a good final school report are required.

Initial Assessment results will be needed to attain if the course is suitable, and if any support may be required.


You will be assessed in the following ways:

- Online multiple-choice assessments,
- Short answer questions,
- Practical workshop assessments.

Future opportunities

This course will give you both the skills and the confidence to enter employment in all areas of electrical installation, including working as a domestic, commercial or industrial employee.

Alternatively, it will prepare you for continuing study in related subjects such as the City & Guilds 2357 Level 3 NVQ Diploma (apprenticeship placement/work placement required)

Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes.

If you haven't achieved an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.

    • Woodlands Campus

      An £8.5 million expansion of our Woodlands Campus now incorporates a new state of the art specialist centre for multi-craft, bricklaying, painting and decorating, plastering, carpentry and an expanded motor vehicle training facility. A new sports pitch also enhances the existing sports facilities.

      The new Engineering and Construction facility houses twelve new workshops; six for construction and six for motor vehicle. The rooms accommodate an MOT/motor sport workshop; an engine workshop and further rooms for decorating, plastering and brickwork.

      Woodlands has purpose-built engineering workshops as well as commercial-standard hair and beauty salons. Our IT facilities, learning resource centres and library are also first-rate.

      We also offer a selection of higher education courses at our Woodlands Campus so you can continue your studies with us.

      Via Bus or Train

      The main bus terminal in north Solihull is located in Chelmsley Wood centre. The number 94, 676, 694, 71, 966 and 966A stop at the main terminal with the number 94 stopping on Auckland Drive. The nearest train stations are Marston Green or Water Orton station both located approximately 20 minutes away.
