Further Mathematics A Level at The Compton School

Course description

Further Mathematics prepares you for university courses and careers that are rich in mathematics. Further Mathematics is preferred for many courses, and is required by some. Universities often offer incentives for students who have a qualification in Further Mathematics.

Course content

Further Mathematics is offered as an additional qualification to A-Level Mathematics. The A2/AS level courses are offered on a modular basis. Over two years the following modules are offered:
- Further Pure Mathematics: FP1, FP2
- Mechanics: M1, M2
- Statistics: S1, S2, S3
- Decision Mathematics: D1

The full A-Level consists of six modules (FP1, FP2, plus any four applied units).

Please note: modules taken for Further Mathematics are additional to those taken for Mathematics. Students who are awarded certificates in both Advanced GCE Mathematics and Advanced GCE Further Mathematics must use unit results from 12 different teaching modules.

Examinations for each module at the end of Year 13, which are assessed by 1.5 hour written examinations and are equally weighted.

Future opportunities

Further Mathematics is an A-Level qualification which both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in A-Level Mathematics. An A-Level in Further Mathematics is a highly regarded qualification both by universities and employers. An A-Level in Further Mathematics may be compulsory for degrees in Engineering and Mathematics, and is strongly advised for many other degrees like Economics and Architecture.
