Course description

  • GCSEs to include grade C in Art (portfolio assessment if Art or Graphic Design not taken)
  • Grade C in English Language advantageous
  • Practical coursework forms 60% of the course. The exam unit (40%) is also practical. You will be required to complete written work as part of your first year coursework and a 3000 word essay in the second year.

Course content

Graphic Design is based on creating an image that has a commercial purpose. Typography, layout, illustration and advertising are all essential parts of the course which concentrates on the way in which desginers solve problems for their clients, from a brief requiring basic research and photography to layered and sophisticated solutions to a design problem.Enthusiasm, creativity, organisation and self-discipline will be important attributes. Commitment outside of lessons is crucial to success. You will be set regular homework which will take the form of written work, making studies of design techniques and putting work into your designer’s diary. Every piece of work you produce from September to May contributes to your portfolio for assessment. You will learn how to use observational drawing techniques, Adobe Photoshop, tablet drawing pens, photo experiments, typography and creative collage to make outcomes. There will be at least one study visit to galleries during the autumn term to enrich and inspire you. You will benefit from a well-resourced and experienced department with a specialist technician.
