Course content

The course develops the dancer’s skills through a variety of practical and theoretically based units. As your main techniques you will study Street Dance, Jazz Dance, Ballet and Contemporary Dance Styles as well as studying units that will develop your creative, choreographic and performance skills. Technical units will develop your core strength, flexibility, alignment and movement styles and you will work with specialist tutors to expand your skills so that you are ready for performance. Practical assessments happen both in the classroom and in the department’s twice yearly performances and students on this course perform a dedicated Final Major Project performance that allows students to display their skills in a range of styles and genres. Theory units are assessed through presentations, portfolio building, essay writing and videoed conversations with your tutor. Staff work to ensure the assessments suit your learning needs and as part of the course you will have a personal tutor to support and guide you through the course and offer career guidance. You will also be offered the opportunity to participate in workshops with visiting industry professionals and the department has a trip to London where you can see a leading West End show and take part in classes at Danceworks, Move it or Pineapple Dance Studios.

Our students successfully progress to the country's leading universities and training schools and many have successful careers as teachers and performers. Student quote… The college is a great place to be and the dance courses are fantastic. You really feel like you are part of a family. I learned so much and wouldn’t have had the professional experiences I have had without training at the college. Natasha Gooden, Some Like It Hip Hop, West End.
