Music Practitioners (RSL) Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Farnham College

Course description

This two year course, in association with The Rock and Pop Foundation, is a music industry qualification which will equip you with the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress into employment in the music industry or further study at a higher level.

The course gives you the opportunity to develop and master industry-ready skills in diverse disciplines from performing and composing through to music technology and music business.

This course is delivered through practical Performance and Theory. It is structured with Performance being the consistent unit throughout the whole two years and Theory being delivered for the whole of year one, to provide a solid foundation upon which to develop composition, performance and improvisation skills. This course will be delivered at The Rock and Pop Foundation centre based in Aldershot.

Course content

This programme includes six units focused on performance, theory, composition, digital production and music business.

Year 1: Performance is a consistent unit throughout the two year course and Theory is delivered for the whole of year one, to provide a solid foundation upon which to develop composition, performance and improvisation skills. Additionally, Professional Planning is also delivered for the whole of year one to introduce you to methods and strategies employed to ensure both short and long term skills development and a structured logical approach to business planning and portfolio development.

Year 2: You will be introduced to the history of the Record Industry, which serves to provide context by which you can begin to monetise your skills. The unit acts as a natural pre cursor to the unit covering Copyright and Publishing. 

Year 2 will also see the introduction of the Digital Recording and Sequencing realm, which will provide a platform from which you can develop your skills as both producers, composers and recording artists.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Maths and English; or a Level 2 qualification at Merit or above.


This qualification is equivalent to one-and-a-half A Levels and is assessed by a combination of internally-assessed (65%) and externally-assessed (35%) activities.


Future opportunities

This course will prepare you to study at degree level, and will provide you with the thorough grounding from which to make your own decision about your personal and professional development.
