Product Design - Graphics AS and A level at Friesland School

Course description

Product Design with Graphics is a new and exciting course at Friesland due to popular demand. This course opens up a variety of career paths and opportunities within the design industry. This course could lead you into architecture, illustration, product design, computer generated design, graphic design and engineering to name just a few.

If you want a career in Design you might combine Product Design with subjects such as Physics, Maths, Art and Design and Business studies.

Course content

AS: In the first year you will study 2 units. Unit 1 is focused on creating a portfolio of creative skills, while unit 2 is focused on the theory of Design and Technology in practice.

A2: The second year of the course also has 2 units. Unit 3 is the theory of designing for the future and Unit 4 consists of one major commercial design project that will have a Graphics outcome with supporting evidence to go alongside it.

Entry requirements

Grade C in GCSE Technology

If you have an understanding of Photoshop or a similar design programme, you would really benefit from it on this course. While it is not essential a significant amount of this course will be computer based.


. In year 12 there are 2 main assessment points although assessment will take place throughout the course. The 1hour 30 minute written exam will be worth 20% of the overall grade and the coursework portfolio will be worth 30% of the total mark. In year 13 the assessment is the same where the coursework accounts for 30% of the final grade and the final 2 hour written exam accounts for 20%.
