WHY CHOOSE PSYCHOLOGY?
This scientific subject is suitable for a wide range of students who have an interest in studying aspects of human behaviour and experience. The subject matter of Psychology is extremely wide-ranging and will impact on many other areas. Besides increasing knowledge and understanding about human behaviour, students will learn how to express themselves coherently and how to challenge information. The course covers a number of recognised core approaches to Psychology which aim to underpin the knowledge and understanding of the subject. These are cognitive, developmental, biological and social psychology together with the psychology of individual differences and the scientific study of research methods. The intention is to engage students in issues and debates in the scientific study of contemporary psychology and to master the skills of critical, creative and practical thinking.
CONTENT - Advanced Level
There is an additional range of topic-based options which bring together explanations from different psychological approaches, issues and debates in Psychology.
Students will develop research methods and skills through the analysis of data using both descriptive and inferential statistics. There is an additional range of topic-based options (e.g. sleep, aggression and relationships) which bring together explanations from different psychological approaches, issues and debates in Psychology. Also, one particular application of Psychology in action (e.g. addiction) is studied in detail.
Two written papers (1 hours and 2 hours) consisting of essay questions and one compulsory structured question.
WHAT CAN I DO WITH PSYCHOLOGY?
Studying Psychology is stimulating and many students go on to study Psychology at degree and postgraduate levels. Psychology graduates can work in areas as diverse as: health, business and finance, personnel, education, social work, police, prison service, marketing and advertising and sport.
WHAT DO I NEED TO START THE COURSE?
No prior knowledge of Psychology is necessary, although it is desirable to have good oral and written communication skills and an ability to express yourself well in discussions and presentations. Strong English skills are important as assessment in examinations is mainly through written structured or essay style answers. Psychology is a science and therefore good mathematical skills are needed for the appropriate statistical analysis of data. The ability to work well, both in groups and independently is encouraged and an enquiring mind is also a useful asset!
