English Literature A Level at Alsop High School

Course description

As well as being an excellent stand alone choice, Literature A level sits beautifully alongside other Alsop A level courses, such as History and Film Studies. If you enjoy reading and sharing your opinions with your peers and you feel the challenge of a an A level course is not too daunting, then A level literature is the course for you.

Course content

English Literature is a vibrant and stimulating course which introduces students to a truly eclectic range of plays, poetry and novels from a variety of different genres and contexts ranging from Shakespeare to modern 20th and 21st century classics, such as Enduring Love and The Catcher in the Rye. Pupils will be given the opportunity to take an analytical and critical approach to texts, drawing on literary theories and philosophy. The course takes the pupils beyond the texts to appreciate the social/ historical contexts and wider ideological implications.

Future opportunities

Literature A level is well respected and held in high regard by universities. The course enables pupils to develop both written and key communications skills, which prove invaluable when applying to universities, jobs and participating in interviews. Students have gone on to study university courses in English, Education, Media, Film and History.
