Design and Technology: Product Design: Graphics Products A Level at Westcliff High School for Girls

Course description

You will need to take responsibility for planning and managing your own work as there is a strong coursework component in this subject requiring independent learning and the ability to communicate with others to enhance research techniques. The skills that you will develop in planning and management are essential in Higher Education and are highly valued by employers.

Course content

AS Key Learning: Made up of 2 units: Unit 1 is portfolio coursework in which students are required to demonstrate creativity and flair when investigating, designing and making products. Different products should be chosen for the three distinct sections as students are being asked to carry out three smaller and more focused tasks which build up to provide a detailed portfolio of their skills. Unit 2 is Design and Technology in Practice.

A2 Key Learning: The specification seeks to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of, and skills and application in, designing products. They will also develop their research, analysis, product development, project planning and evaluation skills. At this level students are given the opportunity to apply the skills they have acquired and developed throughout this course of study, to design and make a product of their choice. This also includes a required 2-D element.

Entry requirements

Grade B GCSE in Graphic Products/ Product Design/Resistant Materials/Engineering full course or grade A in either short course


Assessment: Unit 1 (portfolio coursework) marked out of 90; Unit 2 1 x 1 hour 30 minutes written examination

Assessment: 1 x 2 hour written examination (Unit 3) and Unit 4 (coursework).

Future opportunities

An A Level in Product Design: Graphic Products can lead to many opportunities in Higher Education and careers in industry such as: Graphic Design, Computer Graphics, Art and Design and many other areas requiring creativity, CAD/CAM and communicative skills.
