Public Services - NCFE Level 1 Entry to the Uniformed Services at North Kent College

Course description

Working in Public Services can provide a truly satisfying career, especially if you enjoy working with people in a varied, exciting working environment. The Level 1 Diploma in Entry to the Uniformed Services course will suit you if you are highly motivated and are looking to combine classroom-based study with exercise, sport, outdoor activities and residential trips. The course will introduce you to the skills required for a career in any of the uniformed services such as Police, Fire Service, Army, Navy, RAF, Royal Marines or Prison Service.

The course is aimed at 16-19 year olds who have just completed their GCSEs, or are looking to get back into education to study in this expanding and desirable subject area.

Course content

The course consists of 7 units. You will also study a functional skill in either Maths or English.

  • Team Working Skills
  • Carrying Out Essential Map Reading and Navigation
  • Participate in Competitive Sports
  • Developing Self Discipline
  • Health, Safety and Emergency Care

The programme is taught through theoretical and practical training sessions supported by functional skills. Each lesson will provide you with assessment opportunities as you work to achieve your goals and targets. You will need an active passion for the public services and your tutors will encourage you to discuss your own achievements as well as the issues in society.

Additional Courses

During the course, there will be opportunities to achieve other qualifications in addition to your main programme. These additional qualifications may include first aid and customer services.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.  However successful applicants must demonstrate a willingness to become involved in all aspects of the public services including the practical and theoretical.  You should show a willingness to help and volunteer your time to assist the public.


A wide variety of assessments will be used. The NCFE programme will use continuous assessment rather than examinations and you will be able to track your performance as you work towards your targets. You will be encouraged to manage your own assessments and identify where you have met the required standards. Methods of assessment may include web blogs, presentations, practical demonstrations, posters, reports, leaflets, interviews and discussions. To facilitate assessment, you will be expected to devote personal time to your studies.

19+ - £1650 - Registration Fee £95

Other Costs (payable by all students): £50 Trip

Future opportunities

The majority of learners progress onto a Level 2 course in Public Services. If you want to progress into employment the following areas would be suitable: Police Service, Fire & Rescue Service, Armed Forces, Prison and Ambulance Services.

Further information

During the course, there will be opportunities to achieve other qualifications in addition to your main programme. These additional qualifications may include functional skills, work skills, first aid, and customer services.
