Economics AS/A2 Level at Alexandra Park School
The overall aim of the course is to enable students to:
- Develop an understanding of economic concepts and theories through a critical consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life
- Apply economic concepts and theories in a range of contexts and to appreciate their value and limitations in explaining real-world phenomena
- Analyse and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role of government within it
The AS GCE forms 50% of the assessment weighting of the full Advanced GCE. AS GCE is assessed at a standard between GCSE an d Advanced GCE and can be taken as a standalone qualification or as the first part of the full Advanced GCE course.
Assessment is by means of 2 units of assessment for AS GCE and 5 units of assessment for Advanced GCE.
Students entering the Economics course should have achieved Grade B or above in GCSE English and GCSE Maths, plus GCSEs of Grade C or above in at least three other subjects. Students who have studied Business Studies at GCSE level are required to have achieved at least a grade B.
The Economics course is designed to offer students the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding that will prepare them for entry into employment, or self-employment in a wide range of business environments. Students can also progress to further qualifications, including HND or degree level courses.
