A Level Biology at St Thomas More High School for Boys

Course description

Biology is the study of life and living things. It includes the organisation of living things, the make-up of cellular components and the physiological processes that allow living things to survive.

Course content

During the course you will be studying the following material:

Biological molecules, Cellular organisation, Exchange of substances, Lungs, Heart, Immunology, DNA, Genetic Diversity, Variation, Adaptation, Classification, Selection and Biodiversity. Populations, Survival and Response, Ecosystems, Photosynthesis, Respiration, Energy Transfer, Nutrient Cycles, Succession, Inheritance, Coordination and Control, Skeletal Muscle Contraction, Homeostasis, Feedback Loops, Speciation, DNA and Protein Synthesis, Gene Expression and Gene Technologies.

Entry requirements

  •  GCSE Double Science at grade AA or above OR
  •  Grade A in Biology and B in Chemistry (separate sciences)
  •  English grade B and preferably Maths as well
  •  An enthusiasm to engage in the subject
  •  A mature approach towards independent study


The exam board is AQA *
The course is split into 3 papers – all 2 hour exams.
Paper 1 – 35% of A Level grade
Paper 2 - 35% of A Level grade
Paper 3 – Practical Skills Assessment & Synoptic Essay – 30% of A Level grade
*The course structure is not expected to change but at time of writing the finer details of the course was still to be approved by Ofqual.
