Sociology AS and A level at Frome Community College

Course description

AS level

AS Sociology is a separate qualification and the qualification has been designed in line with Department for Education content requirements to be co-teachable with A level Sociology.

Paper 1 – socialisation and culture (70% of qualification)

Section A: cultural transmission, socialisation and the acquisition of identity

Section B: families and households

Section C: sociology of religion

Paper 2 – methods of sociological enquiry

(30% of qualification)

Assessment for AS – one hour fifteen minutes 

 

A level

This specification fosters development of critical and reflective thinking with a respect for social diversity. It provides an awareness of the importance of social structure and social action in explaining social issues. Learners are encouraged to develop their own sociological awareness through the study of contemporary       UK society.

Paper 1 – socialisation and culture

Section A: cultural transmission, socialisation and the acquisition of identity

Section B: sociology of families and households

Section C: sociology of religion 

Assessment - two hours thirty minutes  (40% of A Level )

Paper 2 – methods of sociological enquiry

Assessment - one hour forty-five minutes (20% of A Level)

Paper 3 – power and stratification

Section A: social differentiation and stratification.  (social inequality)

Section B: criminology

Assessment - two hours thirty minutes  (40% of A level)

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades A* - C including English and/or maths, grade B in either GCSE English literature or language
