Media Studies AS & A Level at Sir John Deane's College
We live in a media driven world, this course allows you to explore the role it plays in your life and the influence it has in society. You’ll also have the opportunity to be creative with hands on technical experience in our state-of-the-art digital editing suite, as well as on location.
During the course you’ll have full use of our excellent facilities including; a digital editing suite with 25 Macs, the full Adobe package including Premiere Pro editing and InDesign software for Print Design, media lecture rooms with digital projectors, interactive whiteboards, digital cameras, tripods and microphones.
Topics you will study include different media forms such as films, video games, TV programmes, magazines and social media. You will research, plan and create a new media product, for example the opening of a horror/thriller film, a film trailer, or the front page and article for a music magazine. Further production work may include creating a music video.
Both coursework and written examinations count towards your final grade, although the majority of marks are from written examinations.
We actively encourage our students to become young film-makers and enter their work in student film festivals. Students have attended film festivals, such as York where they have taken part in workshops with industry experts.
We have links with local media organisations and students have gained work placements with various companies including Channel M, in Salford and in local radio.
Some students go on to study for a university degree in Media Studies (e.g. TV production or a more theoretical course) or a related area such as film or cultural studies.
The course allows students to develop a range of skills that are transferable to other areas of study as well as employment.
