Biology AS/A at Ormskirk School
Biology is the study of life and living organisms. Saving the planet, feeding people, GM organisms, curing disease are just a few of the challenges that today’s Biologists face. The ‘A’ level course builds on the Biology covered at GCSE and encompasses ecology, humans as organisms, plants as organisms, genetics and evolution. Biochemistry and behaviour are introduced. It is a wide-ranging subject involving many other disciplines such as Maths, Chemistry, Geography and Physics. It can be fascinating, stimulating and fun. Biology may be combined with any other 'A' level subject, depending on timetable and availability of places. The subject is particularly complemented by Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography, Psychology and Physical Education. A variety of teaching techniques are used, with pupils carrying out practical work, investigations, discussion, supported self-study and problem solving. A residential field course forms an important part of our Biology course, enabling pupils to carry out a large amount of practical fieldwork for the Environment Module.Regular testing is also an important part of the Biology course - helping you and your teachers to keep track of your progress. The department has an excellent range of up-to-date textbooks, which are available for borrowing, and students are issued with textbooks to keep at home during the course.
You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses that may overlap with Biology or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Biology and Human Biology, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Biology or Human Biology such as a Doctor, Science Technician or Marine Biologist. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
