Course description

Mathematics is a very popular A-Level which is held in regard by Universities and businesses alike. It is known as a facilitating subject, which means that it helps students to study lots of other subjects and to pursue different careers. It is one of the best subjects to develop your analytical, research and problem solving skills. Not only will mathematics give you the knowledge to tackle scientific, mechanical, coding and abstract problems, it will also help you develop logic to tackle everyday issues like planning projects, managing budgets and even debating effectively.

• Coordinate Geometry.
• Statistics.
• Binomial Expansion.
• Logarithms.

Year 13

• Further Trigonometry.
• Further Calculus.
• Further Coordinate Geometry.
• Differential Equations.
• Kinematics.
• Statics and Dynamics.
• Projectiles.
• Momentum.

Entry requirements

Minimum of a Grade B in GCSE Mathematics.

Assessment

Year 12
3 examination papers:
Core Mathematics 1
Core Mathematics 2
Statistics 1

Each paper is a 1h 30 minutes written exam that counts for a third of the AS qualification or a sixth of the full A-Level qualification.

Year 13
3 Examination papers:
Core Mathematics 3
Core Mathematics 4
Mechanics 1

Each paper is a 1h 30 minutes written exam that counts for a sixth of the full A-Level qualification.

Future opportunities

Success with AS or A-Level Mathematics opens up a range of University and careers opportunities. It is recommended and sometimes required for subjects such as Computer Science, Accounting, Chemistry, Biology and Life Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Business Studies, Management Studies, Architecture, Geology, Psychology, Surveying and even Philosophy.
