AS/A2 Applied Art & Design Double Award at King Edward VI School, Lichfield
Students will achieve a double award e.g. AA, BA, BC etc. with the equivalent University points it is effectively 2 A levels! Students will work with a wide range of materials and techniques with the purpose of helping them to express ideas, beliefs, opinions etc. in a visual way. The work of contemporary designers and Artists as well of those from other times and cultures will be an important and integral part of the course, as is the importance of social and historical context.
Group projects and work for the community will be encouraged as will contact with Art and Design companies, Businesses, Galleries, Artists and Designers.
There is no opportunity to take AS separately to A2 - all 12 units need to be covered during the 2 years. The work done is not unit specific but cross unit projects.
5 GCSEs A* - C (including English & Maths)
A* - B grades at GCSE Art and Design.
Assessment is continuous throughout the course. AS – 6 units, A2 – 6 units and a final grade is reached by combining all 12 units together. 8 projects over the 2 years are externally set and moderated. These follow broad based schemes allowing students to make a personal response.
A very large field of opportunities are available for which Art and Design training is a requirement e.g. fine art, fashion and textiles, with or without marketing / buying, Graphic Design, Product Design etc. Opportunities for which Art and Design is advisable e.g. Architecture, Media and Film students etc. For all of these courses, and more, Universities want to see a Free Hand Portfolio of work. It is important to add that many students with Art and Design as one of their chosen A levels have successfully gone on to study a wide range of new courses at prestigious Universities, including English, Law, Engineering, Business Studies and Medicine.
Students will be expected to purchase a basic Art Pack at the beginning of the course. The track record of the Art and Design Department is outstanding, achieving 100% pass rates each year with large numbers of students achieving the highest grades. Many students each year go on to further study at highly acclaimed institutions across the country.
