Art and Design (BTEC Level 3) at New College Swindon
BTEC Level 3 National qualification is delivered over 2 years in a step-up mode whereby, you first study for the Extended Certificate and on successful completion you will progress to the Foundation Diploma and ultimately the National Extended Diploma.
This course is a new and exciting way of studying Art and Design. Students who are interested in perusing a career in Art and Design have the opportunity to develop and refine their skills through a range of practical and theoretical Units. Working in a wide variety of art disciplines students will gain a broader understanding of the of Art and Design industry. The qualification is split into three parts; The Certificate in Art and Design (broadly equivalent to 1 A Level); and Diploma in Art and Design (equivalent to 1.5 A levels); and the Extended Diploma (which is the second year part of the course) makes the whole programme equivalent to 3 A Levels. The full 2 year programme consists of 13 units of which 7 are mandatory and 4 are external.
Students will follow a varied programme of study which will include learning about working in the art and design industry, 2D & 3D visual communication, building an art portfolio, using ideas to explore develop and produce art and design and contextual references in Art and Design. Students can choose to explore a range of other design briefs including Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography, 3D Design, Textiles and Fashion for their independent projects. Students are required to study a specific number of Units to gain a BTEC level 3 extended qualification.
You will need 5 GCSE’s at grades C or above and a keen interest in Art and Design as this is a full time course. All applications without the basic entry requirements will be considered. This will be on an individual basis, which will include the submission of a portfolio of art work and an interview by the course leader.
Assessment is by coursework. In 2016-17 there will be 2 external units that are assessed by the awarding body. All the work you do in class counts towards your final grade. Each part of the qualification is based on students achieving all the specified learning outcomes for the required units. Students must satisfy specified assessment and grading criteria to gain a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
The successful completion of the BTEC L3 National Extended Diploma in Art and Design can lead on to a Level 4 qualification such as BTEC Higher Nationals in Art and Design and some students successfully go onto BA courses in Art & Design related subjects. Within New College you may progress onto the Foundation Degree in Professional Photography.
