Drama and Theatre Studies A-Level at Coppice Performing Arts School

Course description

The course is designed for students who have a strong interest in acting but are also keen to improve their directing, analysing and devising skills. It has a balance of practical and written activities to enable students to develop a wide range of knowledge linked to Drama and Theatre Studies. Students will explore, create, perform and analyse theatre in a detailed way throughout their study.

Course details & assessment:

The four units in the Drama and Theatre Studies A-level are all compulsory:

Year 12 (AS Year) Unit 1:

Exploration of Drama and Theatre

(Internally assessed - 20% of the A-level’s marks)

Unit 2: Theatre Text in Performance

(Externally assessed - 30% of the A-level’s marks)

Year 13 (A-level Year) Unit 3:

Exploration of Dramatic Performance

(Internally assessed - 20% of the A-level’s marks)

Unit 4: Theatre Text in Context

(Externally assessed - 30% of the A-level’s marks)

In their first term the students will practically explore two play texts and will then apply what they have learnt by going on a drama trip and evaluating a piece of live theatre. This first unit of the course is internally assessed based on work completed in practical lessons and written assignments.

Students will then move on to Unit 2 where they will be working on a group scripted performance and a monologue or duologue. These two pieces will be prepared ready to perform in the summer term when they will be assessed by a visiting examiner.

In the A2 year students will create their own piece of devised theatre and perform this in front of a target audience. This Unit is assessed internally based on each student’s rehearsal contributions, quality of performance and ability to evaluate their work in written form.

They will then study a play text, specified by the exam board, and learn how to approach it from the point of view of a director. This final Unit of the A-level is assessed via a written examination that tests students’ knowledge and understanding both as a director and analyser of theatre. In addition to this they will explore an area of theatre history and compare the original performance conditions of the play with contemporary performance conditions.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement for Level 3 study is 5 GCSEs A*-C including English and Mathematics; these should be in at least 4 different subjects. You will receive guidance about which pathway will be most suited to your needs which will be based on your anticipated GCSE Point Score. If you have a higher Point Score you will be encouraged to take a more academic route and if your Point Score is lower you may wish to choose a more vocational pathway. However, these options will be discussed in your admission interview. 

Specific entry requirements:

5 A*-B grades at GCSE for internal applicants. Strong performers not meeting entry criteria and external applicants, will be required to audition.

For 3 consecutive years our students have achieved exceptionally well, with pass rates above National Average.

      Our Sixth Form students are seen as role models for younger members of the school and, as such, are full participants in the life of the school and support our vertical tutoring house system. A Head Boy and Head Girl are selected to play a lead part in supporting staff, students and the school as a whole.
