Drama/Performing Arts at West Coventry 6th Form (Woodlands Academy, Tile Hill Wood School, Westwood Academy)

Course description

This course will develop you for a wide range of roles in industry and in higher education, by building not only your performing ability; but also your interpersonal skills, self-confidence and understanding of a wide range of issues. You will have the opportunity to explore a range of topics through group and individual work. This will help to develop your analytical skills whilst also building your own opinions on a range of stimuli. You will then apply this knowledge and understanding which will fully prepare you for both vocational and academic options in the future.

Course content

The units that are covered during the course will focus specifically on acting skills. These will be in individual, whole and smaller group work and will involve the following areas of study within the Performing Arts. • Performing scripted plays • Devising Theatre • Children’s Theatre • Storytelling to an audience • Principles of acting • Performing to an audience

Entry requirements

It is strongly recommended that you have previous qualifications or experience in Drama / Theatre to enable you to access the work at this level.

Assessment

Year 12: BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Performing Arts Year 13:BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts

Future opportunities

This qualification provides a strong base of skills for further study of the Performing Arts at University or for any role within this area or public services. As well as production and performance in Drama, this course will also develop your interpersonal, thinking and teamwork skills. Your self-confidence will also be improved, enabling you to confidently go on to any course at university or vocational placements that require these types of personal strengths.

Further information

Students will work individually and in groups for a range of tasks. Physical Theatre, Improvisation, discussion, debate, devising and script writing are all skills that will be covered in lesson time, as students develop ways of producing drama pieces that they will share in performances. Drama pieces will be worked on throughout the year alongside a working journal that comprehensively documents the learning journey and all aspects of the students’ development from the rehearsal stages right through to performance.
