Countryside & Environment (Environmental Conservation) - Level 2 at Askham Bryan College

Course description

This course offers a mix of practical nature conservation with underpinning theory in the ecology and management of British wildlife habitats. It is carried out in a range of natural, wild and urban environments, delivered by a dedicated team of tutors with industry experience.

In partnership with employers and land managers, we have many opportunities to work in woodland, meadow, moorland, wetland and river habitats. Our location gives us ready access to local urban environments such as country parks, woods and nature reserves, in addition to the wider countryside areas.

Entry requirements

Level 2 Study Programmes:

Usually at least 4 GCSEs at grade E or above including Maths and English (new GCSE grading level 3) with Science desirable. Alternatively a suitable Level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1.

Future opportunities

Further Study:

Students completing the Level 2 to a high standard would be considered for enrolment onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Countryside Management or an Apprenticeship in an Environmental  Conservation role.


Students may use this course to progress in careers in the countryside industry at craft level e.g. as stonewallers, fencers. After further study, roles such as a gamekeeper or wildlife manager. Other roles might include estate staff, agricultural workers, volunteers, and national park staff.
