English Language & Literature AS A2 at The Rushden Community College

Course description

AS and A2 English Language and Literature is taught by a team of teachers from within The East Northamptonshire College. Students benefit from experiencing a range of teaching styles as they explore and develop their understanding of how both literary and non-literary texts work. All students must pass AS English Language and Literature in Year 12, in order to progress on A2. The AQA syllabus is followed, which requires the study of 4 units, 2 at AS and 2 at A2.

Course content

AS Level

Unit 1 - Introduction to Language and Literature Study

The study of an Anthology of thematically liked texts looking at significant features of writer's use of language and the attitudes they display.

Unit 2 - Themes in Language and Literature

The study of a pair of texts for this analytical and creative assignment.

A2 Level

Unit 3 - Talk in Life and Literature

The development of literary and linguistic knowledge through the study of a prescribed play alongside extracts from real life and speech.

Unit 4 - Text Transformation

A coursework unit which requires students to transform a literary work into a different genre or sub-genre.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades C or above. This must include English and English Literature, preferably at Grade B or above.


Via coursework and final examination. AS one year, A2 two years.
