English Literature A-Level at Childwall Sports & Science Academy

Course description

English Literature is about encouraging students to respond critically, and with enjoyment, to a range of texts of different genres and from different eras of writing. The key aim is to create confident, independent readers who can articulate their ideas, and can interpret and make personal responses to their reading. We are, however, interested in developing all aspects of literature and for this reason we go on regular visits to the theatre and enjoy strong links with Liverpool University Dramatic Society.

At the start of every course we enjoy an afternoon shopping and discussing texts at Waterstone’s Bookshop to encourage students to visit bookshops and extend their reading.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 A*- C grades in at least 4 different GCSE subjects, including Maths

GCSE English Language/Literature Grade B or above for preference but pupils with a C grade will be accepted at the teacher’s discretion.

An enjoyment in reading, or a wish to develop a wider enjoyment of reading, is essential as you will have to read some of the texts independently at home.
