Interactive Media (Animation) - Art and Design BTEC Level 3 Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma at Exeter College

Course description

This course is ideal if you wish to develop your skills in animation to an advanced level.
You will:
- Undertake projects in animation, game design, video installation and interactive digital media
- Study in dedicated, professionally equipped HDTV facilities using industry standard software
- Have access to state of the art facilities at the Exeter Phoenix
- Get involved with external events such as the Animated Exeter Festival
- Take part in a range of trips, visits and workshops
You will not take exams, but will have to produce work to deadlines for assessment.

Course content

You will undertake a series of projects designed to develop your skills in 2D animation, Stop Frame animation (Claymation), Audio work incorporating Lipsyching, simple game design, basic editing and interactive digital media. You will also undertake research to enable you to acquire knowledge of the work of animators, film makers and designers.

There will be specific links with the 'Animated Exeter' Festival, and opportunities to interact with local animation studios.

Entry requirements

You need five GCSEs at grade C or above (including English language and maths) and three GCSEs at grade D or above and grade C or above in art, media or a related subject.


There are no exams for this qualification, but you need to be willing to produce coursework to set deadlines throughout each year. Please note that work in animation is time-consuming and will require a lot of additional work outside of class time. Projects will be formatively assessed as they are produced, with formal assessment of three units at the end of each of the first and the second years.

Future opportunities

This Animation course is an excellent preparation for further and higher education courses in art and design disciplines. It is also a valid entry qualification, combined with other relevant subjects, for academic courses in higher education.
