Course description

Study Further Mathematics to boost your performance in your standard A level Mathematics and provide a more stimulating experience.

It will also increase your success at university in Maths-based subjects like Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Economics, and of course Mathematics itself.

 Further Mathematics is a very prestigious qualification and taking it identifies you to universities and employers as a serious and commited student who is prepared to meet a challenge. Further Mathematics can help to win places on degree courses in Mathematics-rich subject areas. Many universities actively encourage students to take Further Mathematics qualifications and some prestigious courses require it. Mathematical ability is a very valuable asset:if you have some, make the most of it!



Course content

Further Mathematics is studied alongside A level Maths and will deepen your knowledge and understanding of pure Mathematics. The course comprises of four components, two compulsory 9both Pure) and two optional. The two optional components will be selcted from Further Pure, Statistics, Mechanics and Decision Maths.

Year 12

The compulsory components focus on the Pure Mathematics topics of:

Proof, Complex numbers, Matrices, Further algebra and functions, Further calculus and Further vector.

Year 13

Students will continue to study the topics tthat are first introduced during year 12, extending their range of mathematical skills and techniques. In addition students will also study Polar coordinates, Hyperbolic functions and Differential equations.




Entry requirements

Standard (Five GCSE subjects at a minimum grade 4 or the equivalent including Maths and English) plus a Grade 7 in GCSE Maths.


Paper 1: Core Pure Mathematics 1 (9FM0/01)

Paper 2: Core Pure Mathematics 2 (9FM0/02)

Paper 3: Further Pure 1/Further Statistics 1/Further Mechanics 1/Decision 1 (9FM0/3A – 3D)

Paper 4: Further Pure 1(2)/Further Statistics 1(2)/Further Mechanics 1(2)/Decision 1(2) (9FM0/4A – 4G)


All papers have a duration of 1 ½ hours, are out of 75 marks and account for 25% of the overall course grade.
