Course description

Public services careers are interesting, challenging and at the same time massively rewarding. If you would like to help people in your community or find out what is really going on in the world, whilst also enjoying adventurous activities in a tightly knit team; a career in the public services could potentially be for you.

Course content

Warrington & Vale Royal courses are created to prepare you for entry into the public services. We will help you develop the willpower and fitness you will require as well as equip you with skills in communication, leadership and teamwork. You will also learn the interesting contextual history behind the United Kingdom legislation system and how it applies to current circumstances worldwide. These skills and knowledge are useful for employment in both the private and public sectors. This understanding will most certainly make you stand out from the crowd.

  • Public Service Skills
  • Career Planning for the Public Services
  • Improving Health & Fitness for Entry to the Uniformed Public Services
  • Employment in the Uniformed Public Services
  • Land Navigation by Map and Compass
  • Volunteering in Public Services.

If you become a public services student, you will enjoy challenging activities such as tailor-made fitness training with our highly qualified experienced staff. This will help you to prepare for the entry fitness tests which are common in the uniformed public services.

You will also take part in appropriate and varied activities and residential courses. You will have talks and demonstrations from a wide range of professionals so you will be thoroughly informed about all your career options.

Entry requirements

Learners must have 4 GCSE grade D (or equivalent) including maths and / or English to complete the course, or alternatively, we have a programme for learners to complete these courses before depending on their qualifications.


You can provide evidence through the following methods;

  • Carry out practical tasks
  • Present information that they have gathered
  • Keep working logbooks, records and reflective journals
  • Practice English and mathematical skills
  • Take part in oral or written presentations
  • Take part in role play, interviews and other activities.

Financial information

You will be required to purchase a uniform and sports package.

Future opportunities

Our students go on to have successful careers in many services including the Police, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Royal Marines. The Public Services qualification is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for the public services at operational level, with progression on to Level 3 Public Services.

Will I complete work placements?

You will be required to complete a phase of work placement. Many learners take part in the Army Insights course as part of their work placement.

Are trips and residentials organised during the course?

You will be actively taking part in day related activities off site such as one day and overnight expeditions, sport events, Army, Fire Service and Police exposition demonstrations.

Are there any links with industry?

All the instructors on the course have relevant occupational links with the industry and will arrange guest speakers and visits.

    • By Rail: Anyone travelling by train should disembark at Central Station in Warrington. Our Winwick Road Campus is around a 20 minute walk along the A49 (you will pass the Warrington Wolves RLFC stadium and the Tesco supermarket on your left).

      By Bus: Warrington & Vale Royal College is easily accessible by bus from the town centre and nearby Cheshire districts. Bus numbers* 19, 20, 21, 22 from the Warrington Bus Station to Winwick Road Campus.
