Business BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at The Archbishop's School

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Business has been chosen to provide students with a vocational, practical course that looks at real life situations, and allows students to develop skills and knowledge required in modern day business. The content of the qualification supports progression to higher education or employment in a variety of sectors.

Students will study three mandatory units:

·         Exploring Business

·         Developing a Marketing Campaign

·         Personal and Business Finance

Students will complete one optional unit:

  • Work Experience in Business

There are four other optional units available which may be considered. This would be judged on an individual student basis if it was felt more appropriate than the work experience unit.

Course content

The Exploring Business unit is coursework based which means students are assessed through assignment work.  Learners study the purposes of different businesses, their structure, the effect of external factors and what businesses need to do to survive.

The Marketing unit is assessed externally via a controlled assessment style exam. Students will gain skills relating to how a marketing campaign is developed.

For the Finance unit, students will produce detailed class notes which will be used to revise and develop their understanding in preparation for an external written examination.  Learners study the purpose and importance of personal and business finance.  They will develop the skills and knowledge needed to understand, analyse and prepare financial information.

The Work Experience unit is coursework based, but also includes completing forty hours of appropriate work experience in business and reflecting on their practical workplace skills

Entry requirements

5 A* - C at GCSE including English and Mathematics Merit or Distinction grade for BTEC Level 2 Business would be preferable. Students who have not studied BTEC Business will still be considered.
