Hairdressing and Barbering VRQ Level 3 Diploma at Nelson and Colne College

Course description

There are many employment opportunities available within the hairdressing sector. At College you will develop the skills you need to succeed. Your study will be mainly practical work within our commercial salons, mixed with some theory. You will also learn about the importance of excellent customer service, how to promote additional services and the fundamentals of good health and safety practices/procedures.

You will build on your skills from Level 2, developing more advanced technical skills in hairdressing. You will cover different styling techniques to cover bridal hair, Avant Garde and photographic work.

Course content

You will study a number of compulsory units including:

  • Monitor and maintain Health and Safety
  • practice in the salon
  • Consultation support for colleagues on hair services
  • Cut women’s hair to create a variety of looks Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques
  • Cut men’s hair to create a variety of looks

You will also choose from a number of optional units including Colouring and Colour Correction, Bridal Work, Creative Colouring and Colour Correction, Bridal Work, Creative Hairdressing Skills and Promoting Products and Services.

Entry requirements

A Level 2 VRQ, NVQ or Diploma in Hairdressing plus Level 2 Maths and English.


You will be assessed through a variety of methods including online testing, assignments and practical assessments in a real working environment.

Future opportunities

The majority of our Hairdressing students go on to gain full-time work in the industry, working for local salons, city centre salons, hotels and even on-board luxury cruise liners. If you are passionate and hard-working, you might also progress to university to study a range of degree programmes available in Hair and Make-up for the Media Industries.

The College also works with local salons to offer Apprenticeships in Hairdressing.
