Personal Development for the Hairdressing and Barbering Sector (QCF) VTCT Level 2 Diploma at Mid Cheshire College

Course description

This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group, and will either develop or build on your existing skills, knowledge and understanding of hairdressing and barbering. You will have your skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.

There are nine mandatory employability units in this qualification for you to study including; valuing equality and diversity, improving own performance, career development and employability, investigating a vocational area, work based experience, promoting yourself and preparing for a job interview, valuing customers, understanding the retail selling process and provide information and advice to customers.

There will be four optional units from a range of 7 units which will enhance your practical and technical skills required for your chosen career in hairdressing and barbering including; how to cut basic haircuts on men and women, understanding the various colouring and lightening products and how to cut facial hair.

Course content

This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment. The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study. As well as your core qualification you will study Functional Skills English or Maths, plus English and Maths development as part of the core qualification. Learners will also undertake planning for personal progress and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activities which will include work experience and projects.

Entry requirements

4 GCSE’s at grades D, or above or equivalent


Each unit will have an online exam and practical assessments will take place throughout the year

- VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Treating Natural African Type Hair (QCF)

Alternatively, learners may wish to seek employment as:

- Junior African type hairdresser
- Junior barber
- Junior hairdresser
