Applied Art and Design GCSE (Double Award) at Queensbury School
The double award is a qualification that has been designed to provide a broad educational basis for further training, education or for moving into employment within Art and Design. As with the GCSE Art it is an interesting but demanding practical course which covers a range of drawing, painting and other creative techniques and processes. All candidates should have a definite and recognisable talent for art but, more importantly, a high level of enthusiasm and commitment. Students considering opting for art should certainly discuss their choice with their art teacher, who will be happy to offer guidance and further details of the course. Students are most successful on this course if they are at level 6 or above in Year 9. Parents too are invited to contact the department for advice and information.
The course consists of three compulsory units, which are equally weighted.
Unit 1 - 2D and 3D visual language.
Candidates explore what is meant by visual language and how artists, crafts people and designers use visual language to communicate ideas and feelings.
Unit 2 - Materials, Techniques and Technology
Candidates develop their own skills and explore how artists, crafts people and designers use materials, techniques and technology to communicate their ideas and feelings.
Unit 3 - Working to Project Briefs
The candidate will learn how to plan and produce their own work to a good standard.
How you will be assessedUnits 1 and 2 will be internally assessed through a portfolio of work. Unit 3 will be externally assessed through an examination. The course is a 'Double Award' therefore the candidate will receive 2 GCSE grades (rather than 1) in Art and Design eg AA, BB, CC etc.
